Israel’s Global Journey: History, Politics, and Identity

An Adult Education Experience

January-June 2026

Instructor Bio

Jonathan Lightman

A proud Ashkephard, Jonathan has spoken at nearly every synagogue in both Sacramento and Stockton, and has frequently given Divrei Torah at both Mosaic Law Congregation and Kenesset Israel Torah Center. During the pandemic, he developed two original programs which were shown across the country, The Beatles' Jewish Connection and Is Baseball the Jewish Sport?

Over the years, Jonathan has worked as an attorney for the Anti-Defamation League, creator, producer, and host of Sacramento's Jewish radio show, Chai Sierra, and served as Chair of the Sacramento Jewish Community Relations Council, President and Gabbai Rishon of Mosaic Law Congregation, Chair of the United Synagogue for Conservative Judaism's Shoshana Cardin Awards Committee, and is now on the Board of the Sacramento Jewish Federation.

As a former student of Golda Meir's spokesperson and biographer, Meron Medzini (who was referenced in the movie, Golda), Jonathan has utilized his knowledge of the Middle East and world affairs in both his professional life and multitude of leadership roles.

From 2020-23, Jonathan taught four cohorts of a course on Israel and the Middle East for Melton Sacramento. With so many former students continuing in contact with him, he developed a six-week advance version for the program.

Jonathan is grateful to the leadership of Mosaic Law Congregation's Men's Club and Sisterhood for their sponsorship of Israel's Global Journey: History, Politics, and Identity.
